One of the biggest struggles I have with staying fit and active is that I live in an apartment complex, and I can’t afford a gym membership. Without much room, it can be difficult to get a satisfying workout, right? WRONG! Believe it or not, there’s so much you can do both inside your apartment or just out in the courtyard to get what could be your best workout ever.

Having the right equipment at home is key… but don’t worry! These eight exercise essentials for apartment workouts are compact and easy to store without taking up too much room.

1. Twist Stepper

Mini step machines are my favorite way to work out at home. I can place it in front of the TV and just zone out while getting my daily steps in. It’s a no-excuses way to get yourself moving, and increasing your speed can really get a sweat going!

2. Balance Ball

Balance balls are extremely versatile and can provide a full-body workout. Place under your hands while doing push ups, sit onto while doing sit ups, or place between your legs during leg ups for new modifications on classic moves. You can also use it as an office chair, which will work your core while you surf the web!

3. Resistance Bands

Just because you don’t have access to weight machines doesn’t mean you can’t work your muscles! Resistance bands are incredibly simple yet effective at helping tone and build muscle. Here are some examples of moves you can do with the bands to work your arms and legs:

4. Jump Rope

This familiar childhood activity actually offers one of the most intense cardio workouts! Jump ropes are the epitome of easy to store and easy to use exercise tools that you can also bring with you on the go for quick office or travel sessions. I often bring my rope out into my apartment courtyard with some bluetooth headphones and jump til I drop!

5. Fitbit Flex 2

The best way to track your progress throughout the day is a wearable fitness tracker. The Fitbit Flex 2 is a thin and fashionable bracelet that will record your steps and calories burned. It’s a great way to find out how effective your at home workout is.

6. Core Sliders

Core sliders will transform your floor into a whole new workout platform. Glide with them under your hands or feet for a low impact total body workout. Try them for lunges, mountain climbers, and other floor moves for cardio and strength training. You can find a ton of slider workout tutorials on YouTube— they’re perfect for a quiet and portable way to work out.

7. Dumbbell Set

The most classic exercise must-have, a dumbbell set is a basic essential for many arm and back workouts.

8. Yoga Mat

Whether you’re doing yoga, pilates, or literally any other floor exercise, a good yoga mat will give you a more comfortable workout. Even on carpet, a mat will help provide traction for your feet to keep you balance and make the most out of your moves.
