Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor Review & Swatches

Am I late to the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor party? Ah heck, let’s say fashionably late, shall we? I’ve been wearing several of the shades in the collection for the past month, and it’s taken me so long to write this because I just couldn’t make up my mind about how I felt about them.

There’s no denying that the shades are beautiful. Right off the bat these babies had me with their full coverage color. Most of the shades currently available are pinks and reds, and are relatively bold.

Devotion

Devotion is the most neutral shade that I personally own: a light rosy pink that still packs a lot of color.

Temptation

Temptation is an electric bright pink that has me feeling like a rock star.

Obsession

Addiction

Addiction is one of my favorites in the line, a bold take on rosy mauve.

Passion

Passion is a very wearable red that offers a pop of color without being outrageously bright.

Amour

Talking about outrageously bright… Amour is a show-stopping firetruck red that is another one I’m reaching for the most out of them all.

The color speaks for itself, am I right? But let’s address the elephant in the room: are they matte or not? I mean, it’s in the name, so it’s a no-brainer that you’d expect a certain look from these.

Now, all of the swatches above were taken only minutes after application, and you can obviously see sheen and patches of glossiness. My first observation when testing these for a full day was that the glossiness took a long time to dry down. Yes, after a few hours they finally looked matte… but that’s a timeframe I would expect for any liquid lip product to lose its sheen. However, if you blot with a tissue right away, you can speed it up and get the matte look more instantly. But, I know this was a slight disappointment for some people who were really looking forward to an effortless matte finish with these gorgeous shades.

With that, these do have pretty great lasting power. With the lighter colors, I’ve gotten 5 hours of wear before fading… add another hour for the bolder shades, which leave a stain behind. None of them really hold up after eating— although they don’t transfer very much if you’re drinking water or anything— but reapplication is inevitable if you’re going to be wearing one all day. The formula is so creamy and moisturizing, though, and so they reapply like a dream (unlike other “matte” lip products). It doesn’t take a lot of product to get bold color and full opacity, and the brush’s rounded tip really helps shape your lips and get precise with it.

Regardless of the “can we really count these as matte” debate, I finally came to love the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolors. I think had they been labeled as your regular liquid lipstick, you would hear a lot more rave reviews about them. The color is outstanding, the formula comfortable and the lasting power is there. If Revlon decides to re-release them with a new formula, that would be awesome, but these definitely have a place in my collection as is. I just hope they come out with a bigger shade range soon!

What do you think: do you think it’s fair to call them matte?

Actually when you just apply it, the color is shiny, but if you pat it down lightly, it is very matte. But my problem is that I bought devotion, and it DID NOT look like her picture. In real life, it is WAY darker and not so rosey. The picture is misleading. Also my favorite, which is not one of the choices, is “flirtatious”. It is like the picture of Amour but a little more orange pink and is lighter

Hmm that’s bizarre! I took these photos in natural sunlight and I just applied Devotion on myself as a test and it looks pretty close to the photo! Although obviously differences in computer screens and coloring can be the cause of that.

Devotion is soooo pretty! And I don’t mind that they’re not full-on matte. I think the finish looks great the way it is.

Yeah, they don’t look matte to me. The colors are pretty, but nothing special.

I think that they look lovely – this kind of velvety look is what I usually go for in a lipcolor. I was wondering about whether or not you used lip liner, and if so, what brand? I think they’re perfect!

I don’t wear lip liner very often, usually only with products that are prone to feathering, but when I *do* I prefer nude or clear lip liners so I don’t have to worry about matching shades. e.l.f. has a clear lip liner that I like, and I’m also a fan of the BH Cosmetics Waterproof Lip Liner in “earth.” Hope that helps!
